Overview
MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded directly by mitochondrial DNA, specifically from the 12S rRNA region. Unlike almost every other known signalling peptide, it originates from within the mitochondria rather than from nuclear DNA.
Under conditions of metabolic stress, MOTS-c translocates from the mitochondria to the cell nucleus, where it regulates genes involved in energy metabolism and stress response. This nucleus-mitochondria communication loop represents one of the most actively researched signalling pathways in current cellular biology.
Research Applications
- Studying how mitochondria-derived signals travel to the nucleus and regulate metabolic gene expression
- Investigating the role of MOTS-c in cellular energy expenditure and metabolic adaptation under stress conditions
- Examining how mitochondrial peptides interact with AMPK and PGC-1alpha, two of the most important regulators of cellular energy metabolism
- Research into how MOTS-c levels change with age and what that means for cellular function in ageing biology models
Commonly Paired With
Frequently studied alongside Tirzepatide in metabolic pathway research and with SS-31 in combined mitochondrial function protocols. Also, a core component of the Mitochondrial Boost Bundle. Vial format requires Bacteriostatic Water for reconstitution, available separately.
Storage & Handling
Vial: Store lyophilised peptide at -20°C. Once reconstituted, store at 2°C–8°C and use within 28 days. Handle in a sterile environment. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Pen: Store at 2°C–8°C. Keep away from direct light and heat. Do not freeze once formulated.
